New Instrument Redefines Visionary Leadership

What does it really mean to be a visionary leader? And why is visionary leadership so vitally important to the well-being of today's organizations? The answers to these questions can be found in The Comprehensive Leader, a new learning instrument that uses a simple, easily understood model to help individuals identify their strengths in the area of strategic and visionary leadership. What sets The Comprehensive Leader apart from other leadership models? Laurie Ribble Libove, co-creator of the instrument, explains. "While traditional leadership instruments measure often-unrelated skills and behaviors, The Comprehensive Leader focuses on four interrelated dimensions of active knowledge that we've identified as crucial to successful leadership in the '90s.

"Visionary leaders are aware," she continues. "They are aware of themselves and who they are, they are aware of those they lead, they are aware of what their organization is about, and they are aware of what is going on in the world. Out of their knowledge springs personal conviction and earned credibility. And that is why they inspire others. People believe in them and follow them because they lead from a deep self-knowledge and a constantly updated knowledge of their organizational world."

To generate a leadership profile from The Comprehensive Leader, respondents measure the degree to which they currently demonstrate active knowledge in each of the four dimensions: knowledge of themselves, those they lead, the organization, and the world. In addition to subscores in each of the four dimensions, respondents generate an overall comprehensive leadership score.

In the instrument's interpretive section, participants will learn how weakness in any of the dimensions impacts their development as visionary leaders, and what they can do to strengthen their awareness and understanding in each field of knowledge. They will also learn how to enhance and put into practical use the knowledge they already possess. The instrument's Facilitator Guide includes a series of activities that are designed to help participants increase their levels of awareness in each of the four dimensions.

The Comprehensive Leader can be applied successfully to a broad range of leadership positions, including team or department leaders, middle managers, and senior-level contributors. The instrument is also flexible enough to be used in a variety of organizations, including private sector companies, government, educational institutions, or non-profit organizations.
