New Training Game
Identifies Personality Type
Most trainers are
very familiar with Carl Jung's theory of personality types, and the
psychometric instruments that measure them. As an alternative to
standard inventories and questionnaires, HRDQ has recently published
Just My Type: The Personality Game, an enjoyable, fast-moving card
game that helps participants to identify and explore their behavior
preferences.
Developed by John
Taylor, Managing Director for OCTAVE Consulting Ltd., Just My Type, is
available only through the HRDQ Catalog. The game is played with a
deck of cards that are divided into four "suits," with each
suit representing one of the four Jungian personality dimensions:
Extroversion/Introversion, Sensing/Intuition, Thinking/Feeling, and
Judging/Perceiving. Each card contains an adjective relevant to a
particular personality style (for example, a Thinking card might
contain the word "objective").
To play the game,
participants are randomly dealt several cards from each suit. Some of
the cards may describe them, but many won't. Through a series of
steps, participants compare, discuss, and trade their cards until each
person is satisfied with a hand that best captures his or her
personality style.
According to John
Taylor, the game is particularly effective when used for team
building. "Because it is non-judgmental, type theory fosters
openness and trust within a team," he says. "When all types
in a team feel valued for their unique gifts, a spirit of cooperation
develops and productivity is enhanced. Just My Type helps the process
of team building proceed smoothly toward the objectives of bringing to
the surface, exploring, and resolving differences within the
team."
The game's
Participant Workbook provides an overview of personality types, short
activities, and instructions for generating and discussing an optional
team profile. Designed for use by individuals and teams at all
organizational levels, the game requires about an hour to complete.
Just My Type is available from HRDQ. If you
