New Instrument Measures The Capacity To Lead Change

Why do some organizational change efforts fail while others flourish? According to author Laurie Ribble Libove, successful change efforts "depend on the concerted efforts of people who are closest to the day-to-day operations of the organization." Ms. Libove has just developed Leading Change at Every Level - a new learning instrument that identifies and measures individual behaviors that contribute to driving and supporting organizational change. Published by HRDQ, the instrument is available only through the HRDQ catalog.

"With the widespread adoption of teams, reengineering programs, and restructuring plans, almost everyone is finding their daily work life defined by the responsibility for leading change," says Ms. Libove. "This tool will help people identify talents they already have that make them more effective at leading change, as well as point out skills and abilities they may want to develop so they will be better prepared to lead change in the future."

Leading Change measures 5 behavioral dimensions: Modeling the Change; Communicating about the Change; Involving Others in the Change; Helping Others Break from the Past; and Creating a Supportive Environment for the Change. Respondents generate an overall change-leadership score as well as individual scores in each dimension.

An interpretive section includes detailed background on each behavioral dimension. Discussion questions and an action-planning segment help participants to think about ways that they can improve their change-leadership behavior.

In addition to driving home the importance of individual attitudes and actions to the overall success of any change effort, Leading Change can also be used to gently surface behaviors that are counterproductive to change.

"The empowerment of today's workforce naturally requires that a significant portion of an organization's members will have responsibility for leading change at some point in their career," says Ms. Libove. "As a result, the ability to lead change is becoming a key factor in determining long-term career success."
