Facilitator Behavior Questionnaire
The Facilitator Behavior Questionnaire (FBQ) has been designed to help facilitators of
self-managing or self-directed work teams examine their leadership approach to various
situations faced by their teams over the course of their development. The purpose of the
FBQ is to promote discussion aimed at clarifying the leadership orientation required by
the role of facilitator.
Overview
Once the
theoretical framework was established, situations were developed based on the
qualitative research of the author with self-managing teams. These situations
were given to a panel of experts in self-managing team development and
organization development. Their critique was incorporated into a second draft.
The number of situations for the second draft was reduced to twenty-four to fit
a logical arrangement of stages of development and areas of self-managing team
learning. This new draft was administered to a group of facilitators of
self-managing teams in a petroleum research organization. The feedback from this
group was incorporate into a third draft, which underwent additional
refinements.
Administering
the FBQ
Administration of
the FBQ is relatively straightforward. All of the directions for completion are
contained in the Instrument. The FBQ can be fully self-administered if desired.
The Instrument
requires 25-30 minutes to complete, although there is no time limit. Because the
FBQ is designed to stimulate reflection and discussion, plenty of time should be
allowed. It is recommended that the Instrument be completed prior to the
session. Scoring, on the other hand, should be delayed until small groups of
participants have had an opportunity to compare answers and rationales.
